Biron Barracks (18th century)

Louis-Antoine de Gontaut, duke of Biron, was the governor of Landrecies from 1735 to 1757, and this man was definitely a megalomaniac ! Just have a look at this huge building... Biron took the initiative for the construction of these barracks, and later they came to be named after him. Biron Barracks have very large staples on the first floor, and they could shelter up to 396 men and 69 horses. But actually, it was long used as a kind of private mansion for top-ranking officers, who preferred to live there rather than in the unhealthy narrow streets of Landrecies when it was still a stronghold.

Today, Biron Barracks have been reconverted into a residential building.
